Facebook is the world's most popular social networking site
The site has faced regularly criticism from people frustrated at finding it difficult to make sure content that is personal stays that way.
Vice-president Chris Cox admitted: "You have told us that 'Who can see this?' could be clearer across Facebook."
The central new feature is a privacy control option on the main page, alongside posts. It was previously buried behind a series of menus.
This means users will be asked who they want to share posts with before they are published.
Alongside these controls will be a series of new settings that help users control their profiles.
People will now be able to approve others' posts that mention them, ensuring they are aware of all content featuring them on the site.
Facebook will now also allow users to request other people's photos are taken down.
Photos can be untagged and there is an option to see how other users see your Facebook page.
The California-based firm has been drawn into the changes by rival Google's Google+ service, which launched with many of these features already central to the design.
Most commenters on Mr Cox's blog approved of the changes, one user declaring: "These sound like positive changes, not just change just for the sake of change."
